The Latest: Death toll rises to 43 in aftermath of Florence

Sep 22, 2018

The Latest on the effects of Hurricane Florence (all times local): 8:15 p.m. Authorities say the death toll has now risen to 43 dead in the aftermath of former Hurricane Florence. A statement released by North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper's office said Friday evening that there are now 32 confirmed dead in that state. The statement says a 46-year-old man in Brunswick County died when a tree he was cutting fell on him. Other deaths have been reported earlier in South Carolina and Virginia. Cooper, meanwhile, has praised efforts of first responders who evacuated people from rising floodwaters. His statement...

Silver memo: Hire more women, improve workplace conditions

Sep 22, 2018

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants all teams to hire more women, especially in leadership and supervisory positions, and is urging them to take some of the mandates that the Dallas Mavericks must now adhere to as an impetus to improve working conditions within their own organizations. Silver, in a memo sent to all teams Friday and obtained by The Associated Press, also asked teams to thoroughly review the report that was released earlier this week about the Mavericks. The league stopped short of flatly ordering the 29 other clubs to institute new policies, though Silver's wishes were very clear. "Use...

Flooding: Dam breach at Duke plant; coal ash could spill

Sep 22, 2018

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Florence's floodwaters breached a dam holding back a large reservoir at a Wilmington power plant Friday, and coal ash from an adjacent dump could be flowing into the nearby Cape Fear River. Duke Energy spokeswoman Paige Sheehan said the utility doesn't believe the breach at the L.V. Sutton Power Station poses a significant threat of increased flooding to nearby communities. Floodwaters breached several points overnight in the earthen dam at Sutton Lake, the plant's 1,100-acre (445-hectare) reservoir. Lake water then flooded one of three large coal ash dumps lining the lakeshore. Sheehan said the company can't rule...

King returns to SoCal roots with ownership stake in Dodgers

Sep 22, 2018

LOS ANGELES — Billie Jean King has gone back to her roots in becoming part of the Los Angeles Dodgers' ownership group. The tennis champion first became enamored with the team when it arrived from Brooklyn in 1958. King says she and younger brother Randy Moffitt "grew up bleeding Dodger blue" in Long Beach. Moffitt later pitched in the majors for teams that included the rival San Francisco Giants, or as King puts it "the wrong team." King and her partner Ilana Kloss have taken an undisclosed stake in the Dodgers at the invitation of owner Mark Walter. "It's a...

Rising oil prices haven't hurt the US economy so far

Sep 22, 2018

DALLAS — America's rediscovered prowess in oil production is shaking up old notions about the impact of higher crude prices on the U.S. economy. It has long been conventional wisdom that rising oil prices hurt the economy by forcing consumers to spend more on gasoline and heating their homes, leaving less for other things. Presumably that kind of run-up would slow the U.S. economy. Instead, the economy grew at its fastest rate in nearly four years during the April-through-June quarter. President Donald Trump appears plainly worried about rising oil prices just a few weeks before midterm elections that will decide...
