Asian shares slump on fears of trade war between US, China

Mar 23, 2018

HONG KONG — Asian stock markets slumped Friday after Beijing responded to the Trump administration's tariff hikes by saying it may order higher import duties on a range of U.S. goods, ratcheting up fears of a trade war. Stocks plunged Thursday on Wall Street after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on goods and investment from China. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped more than 700 points as investors feared that trade tensions between the world's largest economies would escalate. The planned sanctions include tariffs on $48 billion worth of Chinese imports as well as restrictions on Chinese investments. Trump...

911 calls: Police fast on scene of Florida bridge collapse

Mar 23, 2018

MIAMI — Police and rescue workers arrived at the scene of a pedestrian bridge collapse near a Florida university campus even before witnesses could finish making 911 calls for help, according to audio files released Thursday. Miami-Dade Police released 15 calls made to 911 dispatchers in the moments after the collapse on March 15. Sirens could be heard blaring behind several frantic callers moments after the 950-ton (860-metric ton) structure fell into traffic. "Oh, my gosh. A lot of cars are under the bridge," one woman told a 911 dispatcher. She started crying and added, "Hurry up, please," before realizing...

LAS VEGAS — Once a Las Vegas titan, Steve Wynn no longer has any stock in Wynn Resorts after selling on Thursday the remainder of his stake in the company he founded in 2002 and with which he built opulent casino-resorts in the nation's gambling mecca and abroad. Wynn Resorts on Thursday announced the billionaire, who resigned last month amid sexual misconduct allegations, sold 8 million shares to two long-term institutional investors. At a price of $175 a share, the value of the sale is $1.4 billion. Wynn Resorts in a statement said the purchase by the two current investors,...

China may hike tariffs on US pork, aluminum, other goods

Mar 23, 2018

BEIJING — China announced a list of U.S. goods including pork, apples and steel pipe on Friday on which it might raise tariffs in an escalating trade dispute with President Donald Trump. The Commerce Ministry called on Washington to negotiate a settlement to the conflict over higher U.S. import duties on steel and aluminum but set no deadline. Beijing's move appeared to be a calculated step aimed at increasing domestic American pressure on Trump by making clear which exporters, especially farming areas that supported the president in the 2016 election, might be hurt. The dispute has weighed on global financial...

Communist Party will regulate China's media, film industry

Mar 23, 2018

BEIJING — Chinese state media will be getting more propaganda now that the Communist Party has announced it will be in direct control of broadcasters and the regulators of everything from movies and TV to books and radio programs. The move is part of a push by President Xi Jinping — emboldened by the removal of term limits on his time in office — to tighten party supervision over broad swaths of Chinese public life as he pushes for what he calls "unity in thought" among officials and citizens. Analysts say having direct oversight of the media will help the...
