US restaurants host refugee chefs who offer a taste of home

Jun 24, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO — At San Francisco's Tawla restaurant, Muna Anaee powdered her hands with flour and gently broke off a piece of golden dough to prepare bread eaten in Iraq, the country she fled with her family. Anaee was preparing more than 100 loaves for diners Wednesday night as part of a program that lets refugees aspiring to be chefs work in professional kitchens. The Refugee Food Festival — a joint initiative of the United Nations Refugee Agency and a French nonprofit, Food Sweet Food — started in Paris in 2016 and came to the U.S. for the first time...

Railroad unloading oil from cars after Iowa derailment

Jun 24, 2018

DOON, Iowa — Crews are working to contain and clean up crude that spilled when an oil train derailed in northwestern Iowa. BNSF railroad spokesman Andy Williams says workers have unloaded oil from 10 of the oil tank cars that didn't leak after Friday's derailment. Officials have said 14 of the 32 cars that derailed in Lyon County leaked oil. Officials say 230,000 gallons (870,619 liters) spilled. Roughly 100,000 gallons (378,530 liters) has been contained with booms in a low-lying area filled with floodwaters near the derailment. Cities downstream from the spill are monitoring their water systems. Workers will continue...

'Jurassic World' sequel stomps its way to $150 million debut

Jun 24, 2018

NEW YORK — The dinosaurs still rule the box office. "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" surpassed expectations to open with $150 million in ticket sales in U.S. and Canada theaters over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. While that total didn't approach the record-breaking $208.8 million debut of 2015's "Jurassic World," it proved the 25-year-old franchise still roars loudly among moviegoers. It also gave Hollywood its first back-to-back $100 million-plus openings in a non-holiday period. After opening with $182.7 million last week, Pixar's acclaimed sequel "Incredibles 2" slid 56 percent in its second week, with an $80.9 million haul. The...

Things to Know about 2 Atlantic City casino reopenings

Jun 24, 2018

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — When four of Atlantic City's 12 casinos shut down in 2014 and a fifth followed two years later, it seemed to many that the city's gambling industry was in an irreversible death spiral. But things have been looking up since then for Atlantic City, due in no small part to the fact that there is now less competition. On Thursday, two of those five casinos will reopen under new owners and new names. The former Trump Taj Mahal will reopen as the Hard Rock, and the former Revel will reopen as the Ocean Resort Casino. Some...
